The Pioneer Award was established in 1998 by Bob and Pat Spalding to recognize person who give much of their time and enrgy to help ensure the growth of Graves County and its communities. The Pioneer Award has been awarded to over 100 people including individuals ranging from state senators and school teachers to church volunteers and civic leaders.
Each year, Graves County awards an individual or couple who share their time, talents or treasures to help the young, the old or the needy. The award is presented at the Fancy Farm Picnic.
Governor Steve Beshear presented one of the awards this year to Wilma and Bernard Hobbs, owners of Hobbs Home Center in Fancy Farm. They were recognized for their efforts to better Fancy Farm and surrounding communities, including providing assistance through their business during the 2009 ice storm.
The other Pioneer Award this year went to the Mayfield Rotary Club for its efforts in the betterment of the City of Mayfield. Fred Biggs, John Anderson and Ronnie Dunn accepted the award on their behalf.
